Green Jobs – The key to sustainable development

According to the ILO “Guide to Equal Transition”, an important part of the transition is to invest on green jobs that help protect the environment and resilience to climate change. They are defined as sustainable actions while also protecting the environment

The Asia-Pacific region has the fastest economic growth rate in the world. Urbanization and employment growth have also led to an increasing demand for the uses of resources and services. Therefore, Asia is also the place with the largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. This is the cause of climate change, leading to negative impacts on the environment and people. The region is also heavily affected by natural disasters such as droughts, landslides, floods and storms. Climate change increases the severity of natural disasters which happen more frequent in the region, causing heavy damages to households and factories. Global warming also affects agricultural production, especially unemployment at rural areas.

Asia emits about half of the world’s global greenhouse gas emissions

To ensure sustainable environment and economic development, we need to make the world greener. The ILO’s “Guide to Equal Transition” highlight a roadmap to make the workplace greener. An important part of this transition is investing in green jobs that help protect the environment and reverse climate change.

Green jobs mean employees raise their voices for better incomes and safer working conditions. The ILO supports green jobs with the benefits of improving energy efficiency, limiting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing waste and pollution. This is an important part of preventing, reversing and adapting to climate change. When jobs go green, we can build a better, more sustainable future for everyone.
