NTTU – On the afternoon of 4th August, at Nguyen Tat Thanh University (An Phu Dong Campus), hundreds of lecturers, students and delegates enjoyed an exciting and dramatic debate contest between 4 teams at the university level of Student debate 2017, with issues surrounding Food safety. The program was organized by FBNC in cooperation with NTTU.

Presenting at the contest were: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong – Vice President of NTTU; Dr. Le Quoc Tuan – Dean of Faculty of Environment, Chemical and Food Technology of NTTU; Ms. Le Thi Thanh Lam – Deputy director of Saigon Food; Mr. Dang Duc Thanh – Start-up expert, Director of Thao Duoc Xanh Investing Jsc.; Mr. Bui Van – Editor in chief of FBNC; with more than 700 students, lecturers from the faculties of NTTU.

   

Hundreds of students joining the contest

Since the launch, the contest has received enthusiastic attention from managers, departments, faculties and many other sponsors. “Food safety and hygiene” is the idea for this debate contest at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. There are 4 teams (3 students each team), namely: Vi Huong, 5AM, 3Stars and T&T. Each team will have 6 minutes for one presentation and 4 minutes for criticizing.

Accordingly, the first debate turn was on the topic “Prohibiting or not the usage of preservatives in food processing”. Vi Huong Team protected their “no ban” view and the 5AM team argued that we must “ban” the preservative in food processing. With the ability to argue, many angles in opposite views, Vi Huong team earned right to go forward to the next round.

The second debate turn was on the topic of “Should GM food be allowed to be used”. T&T team stood with their view “No” whereas 3Stars team stood with the view “Yes”. With bravery, confidence, witty wit and illustrations, 3Stars conquered the “strictest” judges. ews, Vi Huong team earned right to go forward to the next round.

   

3Stars team and T&T debating on the topic of “Should GM food be allowed to be used”

At the end of the second turn, Vi Huong and 3 Stars were the two teams evaluated by the judges to be the two bests. In the last debate turn, decisive turn to determine the winning team, the topic given by the judges was “should the food production be completely organic?” After a period of time for discussing, Vi Huon team stood for the view “no” whereas 3 Stars team stood for the view “yes”. The presentation of fluency, clear viewpoints, quick and intelligent responses helped Vi Huong team “turn the tide” to win the final round of the competition and will represent Nguyen Tat Thanh University to compete with other teams from other universities in Ho Chi Minh City, expected in mid-august 2017, with the prize value up to 100 million.

Ms. Chau Hue Man – member of Vi Huong team, shared: “I have never competed in anything like this debate contest before. This contest helped me and my friends to work out how to set up logic faster, to grasp the problem as quickly as possible. I really hope that in the future the school will continue to conduct competitions like this.”

Student debate 2017 ended in the joyfulness of the competitors and the enthusiasm of the audience who loved the contest. It can be said that this is an attractive and rewarding playground for students. This is not only a chance for students of Nguyen Tat Thanh University to express their thoughts as well as express their ability to argue about practical social issues, thus helping them develop their ability to observe with various perspectives, to think critically and to defend their own opinions. Moreover, the students had the opportunities to gain more information and knowledge. This will be an environment for NTTU students to exchange, to learn with students form other universities, to have better access to social issues and the development goals which were expected by the country: Excellence – Integration – Proactiveness – Spirit – Responsibility.

Student debate 2017 is a program organized by FBNC channel in cooperation with 12 universities in HCM City, has 3 rounds: Preliminary Round, Group Round and Final Round. After Preliminary Round, the winning team of each university will join the Group Round. In this contest, topics that are practical and close to daily life will be discussed in many-aspects view of Vietnamese youth.

Prize value”

– Preliminary round at school: Scholarship for soft skills – Harvard program, valued 24 million VND/team.

– Group round between universities: IELTS traning scholarship, valued 60 million VND/team.

– Final round between universities:

First Prize: 100.000.000 VND cash, 2 nights in Da Nang Intercontinental – Sun Peninsula Resort, valued at 30.000.000 VND / group and gifts from sponsors.

Second prize: 50.000.000 VND cash, 2 nights in Da Nang Intercontinental – Sun Peninsula Resort, worth 30.000.000 VND / group and gifts from sponsors.

Third prize: 20,000,000 VND cash and gifts from sponsors.

The best individual in the competition will receive a full scholarship to study in the Netherlands for two weeks and return airfares for Air France, valued 65 million.
