Teaching method using Case studies enhanced by Finance – Banking Faculty
NTTU – On December 3, 2021, Ms. Tran Le – Business Development Manager in the Education Sector representing the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to introduce the film False Assurance to students.
After being sponsored the copyright to use ICAEW’s film False Assurance, on December 3, 2021, with the coordination of Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huyen – Head of Auditing Department, Faculty of Finance – Accounting, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Ms. Tran Le – Business Development Manager in the Education Sector representing ICAEW to introduce the film to students of the auditing and guaranteed service classes.
False Assurance is the first training film produced by ICAEW, and written by Duncan Wiggets – CEO of ICAEW. The film was made at Chartered Accountants’ Hall, the headquarters of ICAEW in London and has been licensed by many auditing firms, educational institutions and universities worldwide to use as training materials. The film highlights the importance of professional ethics, professional skepticism and the need for quality control and information questions to operate an organization. Besides, the film also provides a variety of economic and commercial information to help students visualize the importance and consequences of decisions made by a Chartered Accountant in business activities.
The participating students were very excited about the attractiveness and useful information that False Asssurance brought. The brainstorming screen changed rapidly, the debating situations about the risks, about the honesty of the board of directors or the judgments of the auditors were full of truth and thrill, the knots were only removed at the last minute of the film… Also at the class, the instructor in charge – Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huyen led the entire story of the film False Assurance, encouraging students to raise their opinions and discuss situations in the film. Although it was a bit inconvenient to use the case studies in teaching by film via the online form, the atmosphere was as vibrant as a discussion in the classroom. For example, with the same question, there were many students quickly answering via microphone and chatbox which proved the content and details of the film to be very attractive. The instructors skillfully led the virtual lesson attracting the students’ concentration and active participation in learning.
From the results of the lecture, it could be seen that using case studies in teaching via the film like False Asssurance would bring more advantages than the traditional teaching. Firstly, the film creates an opportunity for students to have an intuitive and vivid view of the reality of business activities of enterprises, thereby creating motivation and excitement for students in the learning process, helping students absorb the lesson better. Secondly, watching a film also helps students to follow real-time business practices, develop the ability to concentrate, and judge when observing the intertwined situations that arise continuously, at the same time perfecting soft skills, professional skills – things that are difficult for ordinary cases (descriptive passages) to convey fully. Thirdly, this learning material can be used for many subjects, thereby helping students see the relationship between subjects…
The case study training method is currently very popular at prestigious universities around the world. In the coming time, the Faculty of Finance – Accounting in particular and Nguyen Tat Thanh University in general will continue to deploy and enhance the application in many other subjects and many other training programs to help students easily approach to the reality.
