Scientific conference to report on survey results, evaluate the safety and effects of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract in Ninh Thuan Province
NTTU – On February 20, 2022, Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU) cooperated with Viet Nam Orientally Traditional Medicine Association of Ninh Thuan Province to successfully organize a scientific conference on “Assessing Coptosapelta flavescens Korth, evaluating the safety and main effectiveness of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract in Ninh Thuan Province”.
The program attracts a large number of young experts and scientists in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology and chemical technology from faculties/departments of NTTU, external institutes, as well as experts and local people in Ninh Thuan province participated in questioning and sharing about the results obtained during the implementation of related research projects. This is a program within the framework of the research, application and technology development project of Department of Science and Technology of Ninh Thuan province, chaired by the Institute of Technology Application and Sustainable Development, Nguyen Tat Thanh University.
Today, products derived from plants have been used for medicinal purposes for a long time. In Ninh Thuan province, according to the folk experience of the Rhe ethnic group, Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract (Coptosapelta flavescens Korth.) is prepared into a product called “cao khai” in Vietnamese and used as a medicinal remedy with the effect of treating bone diseases, pain relief, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, diarrhea treatment… However, the problem here is related to the use of natural products in general and Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract in particular for the treatment of diseases that is considered lack of scientific evidence to verify the benefits that have been passed through word of mouth for generations. Based on the need to find out information about the uses of this medicinal herb, the Institute of Technology Application and Sustainable Development, Nguyen Tat Thanh University collaborated with Viet Nam Orientally Traditional Medicine Association of Ninh Thuan Province to carry out the project “Surveying the reserve of raw material sources of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth; evaluate the safety and main effectiveness of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract produced in Ninh Thuan province” in order to investigate, survey and determine the scientific name and report on the reserve and distribution of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth; the production and consumption of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract; assessment of chemical and physical composition; main active ingredients; microbiological safety and toxicity; evaluate the effect of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract produced in Ninh Thuan for healthcare through an experimental model; and at the same time propose the production process of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract and develop the basic standard of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract produced in Ninh Thuan. From here, as a controlling basis, the value of this traditional remedy will be developed and improved. |
At the conference, under the chairmanship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bach Long Giang – Vice Director of Institute of Technology Application and Sustainable Development, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, and Pharmacist Nguyen Xuan Tuyen – Chairman of Ninh Thuan Provincial Orientally Traditional Medicine Association, the delegates reported the results obtained during the implementation of the following projects:
– Reserves and distributions of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth; Production, consumption and recommendations of production process of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bach Long Giang)
– Chemical, physical, active ingredients and microbiological safety of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract products produced in Ninh Thuan province (MSc. Pharmacist. Nguyen Ngoc Quy)
– The effect of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract produced in Ninh Thuan for health care (MSc. Pham Tri Nhut)
Some highlights of the projects recorded that the reserves of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth in Ninh Thuan province are still abundant. By decoding the genetic sequence of the Coptosapelta flavescens Korth samples collected in Ninh Thuan, this source of medicinal herbs shows similarities with Coptosapelta flavescens Korth samples in the world. Especially, the Coptosapelta flavescens Korth in Ninh Thuan has a higher genetic diversity and shows its distinctive differences. In addition, it was found that through the analysis process, Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract contains chemical composition, high biological activity and health care effects on animal models that were evaluated.
The research team also reported the results of investigation process, surveying the production and consumption of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract products in Ninh Thuan province. Since then, by applying specialized methods, the production processes of high-quality products from collecting raw materials to the processes of manufacturing and finishing products were proposed. The Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract products obtained from the process will have stable quality, in accordance with the standards of the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia and the Vietnamese standards for medicinal herbs and herbal extracts. Thereby, consumers will have access to a quality, effective and reliable medicinal product.
Based on criticisms, suggestions as well as sharing from the expertise and practical experience of local experts, the implementation team will make appropriate corrections and supplements to perfect the project results in the best way. The obtained results have also been recorded and scientifically validated through publication in domestic and foreign journals, conferences and seminars, including 01 Q1-ranked article in the ISI list, 02 articles and 01 poster in international conferences, and 02 articles in domestic journals. In addition, the project has also successfully trained 01 master in organic chemistry and 03 undergraduate pharmacists.
This conference will be an opportunity for members to continue their research, for scientists and local people to exchange and propose new directions to help develop this type of herbal medicine, as well as a high-quality Coptosapelta flavescens Korth’s root extract product. Hence, this will contribute as the first steps in creating a valuable medicinal product representing of Ninh Thuan province in the future.
