Alumni from the Medical Physics Program receives SEAFOMP Travel Award

NTTU – Lately, the 24th Asia-Oceania Congress of Medical Physics (AOCMP) and the 22nd Southeast Asian Congress of Medical Physics (SEACOMP) took place in Penang, Malaysia, from October 10th to 13th, 2024, with the inspiring theme: “Revolutionising Patient Care through Medical Physics.”

This is one of the most anticipated scientific events in the medical physics community in Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia, bringing together top specialists and enthusiastic researchers. This year, the conference attracted 523 participants, including experts, medical physicists, and students from 33 countries and territories around the world. It provided an excellent platform for sharing the latest scientific advancements and a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange experiences, and explore future collaborations.

Excitingly, this year Vietnam contributed three presentations, one of which was delivered by Mai Khanh Luan, a medical physics student, under the guidance of MSc. Hoang Anh Tung, Head of Radiation Physics department at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. Even more impressive, Mai Khanh Luan became the first Vietnamese medical physics student to present at an international medical physics conference with the topic, “MONTE CARLO SIMULATION OF A 6 MV ELEKTA PRECISE LINAC PHOTON BEAM,” attracted significant attention from the experts.

This research is critical for optimizing linear accelerator systems, estimating dose distribution in quality control processes, and has enormous potential for practical applications that can improve the safety and effectiveness of radiation therapy. Attending the conference expanded students’ horizons while also fuelling their desire and determination to continue scientific research.

In addition, Mai Khanh Luan was one of the six recipients of the prestigious SEAFOMP Travel Award, which allows young medical physicists from Southeast Asia to attend and present at SEACOMP 2024. This award aims to promote international collaboration and connect medical physicists worldwide. It encourages young researchers from developing countries who demonstrate excellent research potential and a strong commitment to advancing medical physics in their home country.
