“Robot Challenge – Fet 2024 – A Competition for Passion and Creativity”
“NTTU – To create a healthy playground that is beneficial for and helps students unleash their creativity while applying knowledge of mechatronics and automation in practice, on the morning of October 13, 2024, at the An Phu Dong campus in District 12, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Nguyen Tat Thanh University organized the ROBOT CHALLENGE – FET 2024, themed ‘ROBOT SUMO.'”
Attending the program were Dr. Nguyen Van Tan – Deputy Director of the Mechatronics and Automotive Engineering Program at Thu Dau Mot University. Representatives from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology included Dr. Le Van An – Dean; Dr. Duong Hoang Long, Dr. Tran Quang Huy and Mr. Hoang Hai Son – Deputies.
“Speaking at the competition, Dr. Le Van An, Dean of the Faculty, stated: ‘The Faculty of Engineering and Technology specializes in mechanical, electrical, electronics, and automotive fields. Throughout our training activities, we always aim to create an experiential learning environment for students through competitions. Therefore, the ROBOT CHALLENGE – FET 2024 is not just a competitive event between robots but also a challenge to the intellect and creativity of the students. I hope that participating in this competition will help students enhance their expertise and create good opportunities for them in their job search after graduation.'”
“It is known that the competition is inspired by the Japanese martial art of Sumo. The faculty combined ideas from this traditional Japanese sport to model the theme of the Robot Challenge – FET 2024 as a traditional Sumo tournament. Teams must design and program their robots to compete within a small ring.”
“The rules of the competition state that each team has one autonomous robot competing, with each round lasting 3 minutes and each match consisting of 3 rounds. After 3 minutes of competition, the team whose robot is pushed out of the ring loses. The team that wins 2 out of the 3 rounds is declared the winner.”
“The competition in the finals is a knockout format, where the first place in Group A faces the second place in Group B and vice versa until a champion is determined. The winning team earns 3 points, a draw earns 1 point, and a losing team earns 0 points. If a team withdraws, the victory goes to the remaining team. If two teams in a group have equal points, additional tiebreaker criteria will be considered. If there is no winner after 3 rounds in the finals, a maximum of 5 additional rounds will be played. If there is still no winner, the two teams will draw luck.”
“The finals of the competition were thrilling until the very last moment, featuring a fierce showdown between two strong contenders: Team BHL and Team VSV. With sharp instincts and strategic skill in their control, Team VSV achieved a spectacular victory in a dramatic round, becoming the champion with a prize of 3,000,000 VND. Team BHL finished in second place, receiving a prize of 2,000,000 VND. Team DNK earned an impressive third place with a prize of 1,000,000 VND, while the two consolation prizes went to Team HKH and Team MPK, each receiving 500,000 VND.”

“Phan Nguyen Tan Vu, a representative of Team VSV, stated that the competition provided many valuable lessons. Participating in the contest gave the team enjoyable experiences, opportunities to learn from their opponents, and hands-on practice. They hope to improve further in order to excel in future competitions.”
“Just three months after its launch, the competition attracted a large number of participating teams and made a distinct impression. The success of the event contributed to affirming the reputation and quality of training at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. In addition to mastering specialized knowledge from their professors in the classroom, students also have many opportunities to engage in practical environments and apply their knowledge through ‘real learning, real experience’ platforms. The competition and the robot creation activities foster a healthy playground that helps students unleash their creativity and apply knowledge related to their fields of study. It creates an academic space, promotes scientific research, and connects engineering students across the university. Furthermore, the competition helps students develop teamwork skills, a spirit of cooperation, and a professional attitude in research and competition. The success of the event also demonstrates that the Faculty of Engineering and Technology is always attentive to its students and continually creates opportunities for them to gain practical experience.”
“The tournament has come to a close and promises to be even more explosive in the upcoming seasons.”
