Training workshop on intellectual property (IP) and intellectual property management in universities
NTTU – On March 2, 2023, Nguyen Tat Thanh University and the Center for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer – Ho Chi Minh City National University (IPTC) co-organized the training workshop on Intellectual Property in 2023 for lecturers, researchers, and students.

The workshop honorably welcomed Mr. Nguyen Van Bay – Vice Director of the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam; Ms. Nguyen Minh Huyen Trang – Director of IPTC. From Nguyen Tat Thanh University, there were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong – Vice President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bach Long Giang – Manager of Science and Technology Department; together with more than 80 leaders and lecturers from faculties, institutes, departments, and researchers.

Speaking at the opening session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong – Vice President shared that Nguyen Tat Thanh University always sets scientific research and innovation activities as one of the important tasks and objectives in the development strategy of the university. Intellectual property activities are carried out to effectively support research and teaching. Every year, the university organizes the training course and invites experts to disseminate, exchange and guide for staff and lecturers on intellectual property. The university hopes that lecturers and researchers attending the training workshop shall be more aware of the importance of intellectual property, creating a solid foundation for innovation, science, and technology activities, since then, the university shall have more applications for registration of exclusive inventions, utility solutions, and copyrights.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bay – Vice Director of the Intellectual Property Office introduced and shared the overview of the Law on Intellectual Property and Industrial Property; new points of the intellectual property rights including inventions, industrial designs, layout designs originated from the State’s budget, trademarks, and geographical indications; complaints and settlement of complaints related to industrial property procedures; the protection of intellectual property rights.
In the workshop, lecturers and researchers also discussed issues related to how to make complaints, the time for complaint settlement, the process of handling and appraising complaints; procedures for registration of trademark protection; how to determine novelty, patent registration procedures; regulations on protection of intellectual property as a result of scientific and technological tasks, industrial property assessment. Through the survey questionnaires of participants after each topic, there are many suggestions for the next workshops.
Over 24 years of establishment and development, Nguyen Tat Thanh University has constantly improved its training quality, research, science and technology transfer and innovation, especially intellectual property. Since the first days of establishment, the university determined the mission of training people with professional knowledge and skills, innovative thinking, and creative capacity to actively participate in the progress of society innovation.
Up to present, Nguyen Tat Thanh University has had 01 utility solution and 15 applications for intellectual property rights approved by the National Office of Intellectual Property, as well as one copyright and many research results are going to be completed for the intellectual property application. Intellectual property activities in the university are of lecturers, researchers, and students’ attention. Every year, the university carries out the application of intellectual property rights, in order to ensure the rights of staff and lecturers when transferring scientific and technological research, inventions, as well as encouraging the dedication and contribution of staff and lecturers in training, science and technology activities. Hopefully in the near future, there will be more intellectual property registration applications and more inventions to be recognized and commercialized.
