Nguyen Tat Thanh University to commence Vietnam’s first internship program in Medical Physics

On the morning of April 19, 2021, Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU), in cooperation with Cho Ray Hospital held an opening ceremony of internship program with the participation of students majoring in Medical Physics. This is the first internship program in Medical Physics in Vietnam co-hosted by NTTU and Cho Ray Hospital.

The ceremony welcomed the presence of delegates from Cho Ray Hospital, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Truong, Deputy Director of Cho Ray Hospital, Director of Centre of Training and Directions of Healthcare Activities; M.S. Lam Dinh Tuan Hai, Deputy Director of Centre of Training and Directions of Healthcare Activities; Dr Tran Van Vu, Head of Training Department; Dr. Le Tuan Anh, Director of the Cancer Treatment Centre; BS.CKII (Second Degree Specialist) Nguyen Van Do, Head of Radiation Therapy Department; MSc. Dang Minh Phuoc, Radiation Safety Department. From NTTU, Dr. Tran Thien Luu, Vice President; Dr. Dang Thanh Luong, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Head of Medical Physics Department; MSc. Hoang Anh Tung, Acting Head of Radiotherapy Therapy Department and 30 Medical Physics students – intake 2018 participated in the ceremony.

Addressing at the event, Dr. Tran Thien Luu shared that “Medical Physics is a field of applied science utilizing knowledge, theories and physical phenomena as well as technical principles into the areas of biology and healthcare to provide good care of public health. This is considered the bridge between physics and healthcare, between practitioners and technology equipment which play an important role in medical imaging and nuclear medicine. Medical physicists are directly involved in the medical diagnosis and treatment processes, responsible for coordinating with general practitioners/medical doctors to ensure safety and to improve effectiveness in diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as the optimal use of medical equipment.

NTTU’s internship program for 3rd year students majoring in Medical Physics is considered Vietnam’s first internship program in Medical Physics in Vietnam. In addition to practical lectures at our internationally standardized laboratory developed by NTTU with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), students will participate in an internship at Cho Ray Hospital for 2 years, divided into 3 phases including Field visit (first half year) – Internship (the following year) – Graduation thesis (the last half year). Students will study and work at the hospital with the direct supervision of a team of medical practitioners, medical physicists and technicians of Cho Ray Hospital. Undertaking the internship at Cho Ray Hospital will become a great opportunity for students to improve their professional expertise, practical skills, and handful experiences in the field of public healthcare.

From the cooperative relationship since 2017, NTTU and Cho Ray Hospital have collaborated as strategic partner in human resource training in the Healthcare sector. NTTU students majoring in Medicine, Medical Physics… have continuously undertaken the internship as general practitioners and technician. Affirming this strong collaborative alliance, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Truong expressed that “NTTU is one of our important strategic partners in the field of training. Through today’s event, we believe that this partnership will bring not only success, but also experience in training healthcare staff that benefit for NTTU and for those working in Healthcare sector like us”.

Department of Medical Physics was established in 2017. NTTU is the first university in Vietnam accredited to fulfil the undergraduate program in Medical Physics. Throughout the years, the University has constantly equipped with modern equipment and improved the quality of training and lecturers. In addition, students are also encouraged to improve their skills in foreign languages, computing, communication and teamwork. This is to maximize their abilities to study, research, access and comprehend the domestic and international learning materials. As a result, graduates can gain adaptability and flexibility in the workplace after undergraduate graduation.
