National Scientific Conference: Fostering Green Education in Universities – Strategies for Sustainable Development

NTTU – Recently, Nguyen Tat Thanh University organized a National Scientific Conference on the quality of higher education with the theme “Fostering Green Education in Universities – Strategies for Sustainable Development.” The event attracted over 350 delegates, including experts, scientists, education managers, and representatives from agencies and businesses interested in green education and sustainable development.

Keynote speakers included Prof. Dr. Huỳnh Văn Chương – Director of the Quality Management Department, Ministry of Education and Training; Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Đức, former Vice Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi cum Chairman of the Professors’ Council of the Physics Department; and Prof. Dr. Phạm Hồng Quang – Chairman of the University Council of Thai Nguyen University.

Representatives from Nguyen Tat Thanh University were Dr. Nguyễn Mai Lan – Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairwoman of the University Council; Dr. Nguyễn Văn Lượng – Vice Chairman of the University Council; Dr. Trần Ái Cầm – President, along with the Vice Presidents and leaders of various departments and faculties.

In addition, the event received presentations on the trends of green education and innovation, not only in quality assurance and accreditation activities but also in the strategic direction of university development and teaching activities, from authors both inside and outside Nguyen Tat Thanh University

The program served as a forum for exchanging and sharing experiences and initiatives to enhance the quality of higher education, especially in the context of green education becoming an inevitable global trend. In Vietnam, the Educational Institution Network Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, issued on February 27, 2025, also emphasizes planning linked to sustainable development goals.

Dr. Trần Ái Cầm, with the presentation: “Priority Strategies of World Universities for Sustainable Development Goals – Relevance for Nguyen Tat Thanh University,” clarified the role of universities in achieving sustainable development goals. She analyzed the priority strategies chosen by universities worldwide, in the ASEAN region, and higher education institutions in Vietnam regarding sustainable development. Additionally, she proposed a direction for Nguyen Tat Thanh University in implementing these goals in the future.

Prof. Chương presented “Quality Management Perspectives in the New Era,” sharing insights on the current state of education quality assurance and accreditation, the quality assurance plan for 2030 and beyond, focusing on developing internal quality assurance systems and improving quality. He also discussed the key factors for effective management of higher education institutions and the direction of state management to ensure alignment with the rapid development of technology and the changing needs in higher education in the digital era.

Prof. Dr. Phạm Hồng Quang shares “Developing a Green Higher Education Environment in the Context of University Autonomy”

In his presentation, Prof. Phạm Hồng Quang proposed methods for building a sustainable learning environment under university autonomy. He emphasized promoting the sustainable development of educational institutions, focusing on the philosophy of life and education that integrates humans with nature.

In addition, Prof. Đức emphasized: “Integrating environmental protection content into the curriculum, applying green technology, and innovating training methods is an inevitable trend. It is not only a responsibility but also an important strategy to help students enhance their awareness and actions for sustainable development.”

The discussions at the conference opened up several solutions for higher education to move towards green education and sustainable development, including:

  • Building and implementing green education policies across all areas, from teaching and research to extracurricular activities.
  • Focusing on improving infrastructure, applying energy-saving measures, using resources efficiently, and reducing environmental pollution on campus.
  • Encouraging and developing research on the environment and sustainable development.
  • Creating policies to support sustainable entrepreneurship in education.
  • Training green entrepreneurial thinking for sustainable development.
  • Integrating courses on entrepreneurship, innovation, and green creativity based on advanced technologies and global knowledge.
  • Developing a green startup ecosystem within the university through advisory systems, international cooperation projects, and businesses.
  • Participating in exchange programs, international competitions, and global projects.
  • Implementing green startup initiatives in the international context to foster a global sustainable development mindset.
